GKN Aerospace to develop and build Blended Winglets for Boeing 767-300ER and 737-300/500

GKN Aerospace to develop and build Blended Winglets for Boeing 767-300ER and 737-300/500, in multi-year agreements with Aviation Partners Boeing.

Following the recent announcement of American Airlines as the launch customer for the Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) 767-300ER blended winglet, GKN Aerospace can now announce its selection by Aviation Partners Boeing to produce this winglet, as well as the winglet for the 737-300/500.

GKN Aerospace is responsible for the design, development and manufacture of the 11' tall 767-300 ER blended winglet, with first deliveries commencing in Q4 2008. The agreement covers the supply of up to 300 767-300ER and 200 737-300/500 blended winglet ship sets. First deliveries of ‘build to print' 737-300/500 blended winglets will take place in Q1 2008.

Jeff Armitage, VP and Director Nacelles, GKN Aerospace, states: "Our partnership with Aviation Partners Boeing is an extremely significant business development for GKN Aerospace. Blended winglets are offering impressive environmental and performance benefits to airline operators globally - around 6% fuel savings, along with valuable payload and range performance improvements. By 2010, only three years from now, APB expects blended winglets to have saved the world's airlines over 2 billion gallons of fuel.

GKN Aerospace will manufacture the 767-300ER winglet in composite materials using the latest automated manufacturing and assembly processes to provide higher levels of product quality and consistency than is possible using traditional methods. The Company will also support Aviation Partners Boeing during the 8 month flight certification process for this winglet, which will commence in January next year.

Aviation Partners Boeing CEO, John Reimers concludes: "GKN Aerospace is one of the world's top producers of aerospace composite structures and this agreement will allow us to significantly increase blended winglet production capacity with forecast production of 10 ship sets per month on the 767-300ER program, and 6 ship sets per month on the 737 Classic program. We look forward to working with GKN Aerospace as the world airline industry continues its transition to Blended Winglet Technology.
