A new BCB bag-in-bag sleeping system has been deployed for British Forces in Afghanistan

After three years of development in conjunction with the U.K. MoD, a new BCB bag-in-bag sleeping system has been deployed for British Forces in Afghanistan.

Known as the Modular Combat Sleeping System (MCSS), it comprises three bags in one. Modular and interchangeable, the 3 bags are very easily added or removed depending upon ambient temperature and, or personal preference.

"The feedback I have obtained has all been really positive. The lads are chuffed to bits with the bag and think it is one item of kit that has been properly thought through as it is compatible with the equipment we use? (Major.. Royal Marines Commandos).

Designed to increase In-Service life, the MCSS features a hygienic inner liner and when used in cold climates, the MCSS's outer and middle bags may, via specially designed long zips, be fastened together to form two duvets.

Why? ..Hypothermia can be fatal, and treating it In-The-Field during extreme cold weather conditions presents many difficulties. In situations such as this, shared body warmth is often vital in the treatment of hypothermia. The MCSS is, therefore, modularly designed to allow the middle and extreme outer bags to zip together providing highly efficient, thermally insulated accommodation for two persons.

For soldiers, (other than those currently serving in Afghanistan), the MoD currently issues three separate bags per soldier. With its reduced weight and carrying size, enhanced thermal properties and complete modular flexibility, from a user's point of view, the MCSS is an unmatched product, and given its durability and superior In-Service life, when compared to the MoD's current three bag issue, it is a very cost effective product.

One of standard service issue designs of sleeping bag, still currently provided by the MoD and nicknamed "The Bouncing Bomb? was utilised by Marines during a 2004 exercise in Northern Norway. There were numerous reports of frost bite occurring during night hours.

Via its modular design, Zip-Up combinations of the MCSS's three parts provide the user with superb thermal insulation and comfort in ambient temperatures right down to -22 degrees centigrade.

Each MCSS features an internal, ultra-thin and lightweight reflective layer, (Thermaflect). This layer reflects a high proportion of radiant heat back to the body. Highly breathable and low bulk, it improves the performance of the insulation by up to 11%. Additionally, it dramatically reduces condensation build-up.

Top to toe attention to detail is evident throughout the design. Each of the MCSS's three parts are colour matched and large, user friendly zips allow extra layers to be easily added or removed in low light / covert situations. Topping off the MCSS system's purpose built practicality and comfort is a detachable and roomy internal Foot-Well. In situations where it is either impractical or dangerous to remove footwear whilst sleeping, boots may be worn without damaging the system and the Foot-Well is easily detached, washed and refitted.

"The idea of an internal boot bag has been very well received as the lads are having to sleep fully rigged in case they're bumped or ambushed at night, so they praise that concept. The insulation qualities are impressive too?
(Major Op. Herrick)

The high performance of BCB's MCSS sleeping system is due to G-Loft insulation. With a loft volume of 329 cubic centimetres, (550 cubic inches) the MCSS's thermal insulation properties are unmatched by any other synthetic fibre and, in this respect, it is comparable with best quality down feathers.

Made in Austria to the highest quality standards, G-loft acts in many unique ways that improve the MCSS performance, not least its ability to maintain undiminished performance even after numerous washing and compression cycles.

Due to the above, many other European Armies are also issuing G-loft sleeping bags to their troops.

In addition to its superb insulation properties, the MCSS's low weight and bulk allows the entire system to be tightly rolled and packed into the larger of the two compression sacks resulting in a pack just 28 cm long x 20 cm in diameter, (8? x 11?). With a mere total weight of 2.7 kilos, the 3 part MCSS is both lighter and far more compact than the in-service "Bouncing Bomb? sleeping bag.
With less weight and bulk, simpler logistics and lower through life service costs, the MCSS will be a real winner with the troops and MoD accountants alike.

Available in two sizes: Standard for persons standing up to 6' (183cm), and Large, for persons standing in excess of 6'.
