Both Mechem and Pretoria Metal Pressings (PMP) two wholly owned subsidiary companies of South African defence group Denel (Pty) Ltd participate at this years IDEX

Mechem:

Operating as a stand-alone commercial business Mechem has been singularly successful in the international market. It provides mine action, battle area clearance and contraband detection services. As one of the largest contractors to the United Nations (UN) for demining services, Mechem has successfully operated in Afghani¬stan, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Sudan, Croatia, Azerbaijan, Eritrea, DRC, Angola and Mozam-bique. ‘Mine action' is the international term for demining, landmine awareness training, landmine victim assistance and destruction of landmine stockpiles. Mechem has broadened its competencies to successfully undertake battle area clearance (BAC). This entails detection and removal of explosive hazards and dangerous remnants of conflict other than landmines.

Over the years Mechem has developed unique abilities for detection of a wide range of substances through the identification of the odour they emit. This capability is based on the proven MEDDS (Mechem Explosives and Drug Detection System) in which specially trained dogs identify a contaminated air sample. The dogs are kept in a controlled environment where they are exposed to air samples collected from vehicles, freight containers or aircraft. They would be able to smell substances varying from guns, explosives and ammunition to drugs and animal products like rhino horn.

Mechem now offers mine-protected vehicles (MPVs) for which it pioneered innovative design solutions twenty years ago, like its CASSPIR MPV, which is arguably still a market leader.

PMP:

Since its establishment some 70 years ago, PMP has built an enviable reputation as a world-class producer of military and commercial ammunition.

PMP's ammunition in calibres ranging from 5,56mm to 12,7mm and medium calibre from 20mm to 35mm conform to the most exacting military standards and specifications. Its innova¬tive approach is evident from the development of the 20 x 82mm rounds for Denel's NTW-20 anti-materiel rifle and the latest 20 x 42 mm for the unique Neopup personal area weapon.

PMP has a daily production of 80 tons of brass at its non-ferrous foundry and rolling plant. A significant portion is exported as commercial strip and cups for the production of cartridge cases and bullets, with the remainder utilised for PMP's own ammunition production.

In recent times it concluded the biggest contract in the company's history for the supply of brass cups to the UK. PMP's commercial ammunition for handguns and hunting rifles is widely acclaimed. While its PRO-AMM range is firmly in the top echelons of the hunting market, the company recently launched a new premium range called "African Elite", built with the well-known Swift A-frame projectile.

PMP is also a world leader in the production of industrial power cartridges, cutting charges and drill-bits particularly sought-after in the mining sector.
More than 70% of PMP's production is exported to countries all over the world.
