Barco's rugged displays selected for Patriot Air and Missile Defense program

Visualization specialist Barco has been selected by Raytheon Company to supply 30-inch HD rugged displays.

Barco's technology will be integrated into the Battle Management Command and Control (BMC4I) of the Patriot Air and Missile Defense System, for which Raytheon is the prime contractor.

Patriot is a combat-proven air and missile defense system designed to counter tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and advanced aircraft. The system's BMC4I, which communicates with launching stations, other Patriot batteries and higher command headquarters, are the only manned stations in a Patriot fire unit. Within the units, Barco's Patriot shelter visualization solution consists of two Modular Rugged Display Stations (MRDS), each driving a dual-head console with 30-inch Barco displays.

Barco's HD-30 display is unique in that it meets the stringent Patriot environmental requirements, while introducing flat panel touch-screen technology with the industry's first 30-inch form factor. The size will help address Patriot's current technology refresh objectives and convert from hard switches to digital, touch-screen based operation.

The integration of Barco technology into Patriot baseline provides an economical solution for the Patriot Display and Control subsystem. It minimizes logistics and training impacts for end users, improves reliability and enables future capabilities.

"We are proud to be a part of the resurgence of Patriot, a system that we have supported for more than 10 years," explains Robert Sanders, Vice President of Barco's Defense & Avionics Division. "This common background has enabled us to develop a tailored Patriot visualization solution in a very limited time frame. Essentially, we went from the first development orders in May 2008 to the qualification phase and first production orders in July 2009."

The HD-30 is a new addition to Barco's existing series of rugged HD displays. The HD-30 has been designed to meet the harshest military shock and vibration standards. It features NextWindow touch technology — an industry first for a rugged 30-inch display. The display's resolution enables Patriot operators to work with a crisp and accurate image of the system's legacy hardware.

Barco received its first production orders for the complete visualization solution in July 2009. In conjunction with Raytheon, a new five year agreement stipulates further development and production of the Patriot visualization subsystem.
