Sweden's Prison and Probation Service select Sepura

Sweden's Prison and Probation Service has chosen Sepura terminals for use on RAKEL, Sweden's nationwide TETRA network for public-safety agencies. This follows the 2006 contract award to Sepura by the Swedish National Police Board for the exclusive supply of TETRA radio equipment to the Swedish Police. This contract was won via Swedish Radio Supply AB (SRS), Sepura's longstanding partner in Scandinavia.

In addition to being responsible for the country's prisons and remand centres, Sweden's Prison and Probation Service also supervises conditionally released prisoners and undertakes the secure transportation of personnel. It performs this transportation service on behalf of other public-service authorities, including the Police and the Board of Migration.

The Prison and Probation Service chose Sepura's SRH3800 hand-held radio, which incorporates Sepura's highly sensitive award-winning sGPS module. The module enables officer location to be tracked at all times, by providing precise positioning, even in built-up city locations. The end-to-end encryption in the SRH3800 provides the additional security demanded by the Prison and Probation Service to protect its sensitive voice communications.

All Prison and Probation Service vehicles will be fitted with Sepura's SRG3500 Mobile Gateway, which gives improved access to the TETRA network in areas of poor reception. It does this by forming a bridge between the trunked network and individual hand-held radios. In gateway mode, this device extends TETRA coverage for voice, data, location and emergency communications, even in the remotest of environments.

Previously each remand centre and prison operated its own communication system. Now, using Sepura's terminals, the entire Prison and Probation Service has access to unified national communications via the RAKEL network, together with the ability to interoperate with other public-service and safety organisations.

Hakan Aberg, Sepura's International Business Development Manager for Scandinavia comments: At Sepura we are fully aware that secure and reliable communications are critical requirements for the Prison and Probation Service: our terminals delivered exactly against the varied needs of this diverse and complex public agency.
